The best way to save in the Capital Region: Use coupons
I love getting questions like this! While it’s not exclusive to baby items it does include them.
“Hey Heather,
I’m starting to read up on organic fruits + veggies, eggs, dairy, grass fed beef, etc. I know you are try to eat very healthy so I thought I would pick your brain. Do you buy your products any where particular. Any ideas you have would be welcomed…
Thank you!”
I’m working on a series of posts that should answer some questions that I get that I’ve been meaning to answer. If you have thoughts and tips, please feel free to share! Comment below or e-mail me at hcfischerblog@gmail.com
I’m sometimes that woman in line ahead of you that has anywhere from 3-15 coupons. Sorry, but I live on a tight budget! I only use them when I have a coupon for something I’m already going to buy. I find these places to be helpful when looking for coupons.
- The newspaper. I subscribe to the Times Union. I pay $12.50 for my subscription for a Thursday and Saturday delivery for 10 weeks. Other people have been able to pick up better deals than that. If you are more interested in details of how you can get a good subscription rate you can e-mail me at hcfischerblog@gmail.com I think it’s worth every penny. Not only do I get coupons in them but I really enjoy the articles and reporting by The Times Union. I feel it’s really a double bonus.
- The internet. You can get a ton of printable coupons from the internet. Some stores do not accept internet coupons so you need to check the store policy.
- Check the packaging. Lots of companies offer coupons, rebates, and offers on their packaging. Some companies offer codes you can redeems for various offers.
Some things to keep in mind, while I love a good bargain I also believe that it is really important to give someone a fair wage for their work. I’m at times willing to pay a certain price for good quality and craftsmanship. Cutting profits for companies can sometimes mean that companies cut wages, benefits for their employees, or even jobs. Sometimes less revenue for businesses can mean higher taxes for us. Okay, enough about that.
Stay tuned for a break down of how I save money here in the Capital District area.

Noah and Lilah
By way of a follow-up to my post about Etsy I wanted to post something about a great store, Noah and Lilah. I had an occasion to by a dress for a precious little girl and since I myself do not have any girls I was thrilled to start searching Etsy. I found Noah and Lilah and saw that the lovely owner Sherri makes custom dresses. She did not have a size 5T for sale on her site but when I made an inquiry she was happy to oblige my request for a small increase in price. Which was so reasonable to begin with and given the added material it was totally understandable.
After being a seller on Ebay I can tell you that I was thrilled with the level of customer service and communication that I had with Sherri. She helped me pick out fabrics, sent me a message when she shipped the item, and replyed to my follow-up questions in short order.
I was so excited to open the package when it arrived, knowing how much the little girl I was going to give it to would love it. It was everything I had hoped for and more! Take a look!
Isn’t it cute? Perfect for fall and I love supporting moms who are working from Etsy. Now I’m looking forward to getting some Noah and Lilah dresses for Christmas and birthday presents for some of my family members. If you’re interested you can take a look. Let me know what you think of Sherri’s things. You can find Noah and Lilah on Sherri’s blog, Etsy, or facebook.

Babies R Us Great Trade in Event
From Friday, August 28 through Sunday, September 20, Babies”R”Us and Toys”R”Us stores nationwide are holding the “Great Trade-In” event, providing our customers the opportunity to trade-in any used cribs, car seats, bassinets, strollers, travel systems, playards or high chairs in exchange for a 20% savings on the purchase of any new baby item, in any of these product categories, from select manufacturers.
The “Great Trade-In” event places an emphasis on specific baby products, such as cribs and car seats that, due to safety concerns, may not be the best candidates to be handed down or resold. Beyond recalls, certain older and used baby items can be potentially unsafe for a variety of reasons, including damage or lack of compliance with recent advances in product safety standards.
Visit your local Babies”R”Us or Toys”R”Us store to trade-in your used crib or baby product. Day care centers or other organizations who wish to exchange items in bulk are encouraged to contact their local Babies”R”Us or Toys”R”Us store prior to returning their used items to ensure adequate availability of new merchandise.

Blueberry Diapers but 3 get 1 free
Just got this e-mail from Blueberry Diapers:
“Due to several requests from customers who missed last week’s BUY 3 GET 1 FREE sale at the Outlet Store, we have decided to extend the sale, but this time for only the next 7 days, ending next week, Thursday, the 27th. After this date, the Outlet Store will close indefinitely.
Please note that when putting items in your cart, it will not show the 4th item as free, instead, it will mark all the contents of your cart 25% off when it has at least 4 items in it. This means that anything over 4 items from the Outlet Store gets 25% off.”
Have to say I love my Swaddlebees!

Baby Cheapskate Contest
Baby Cheapskate was asking for photos of storage ideas so I posted a picture on Baby Cheapskate’s Face Book. I had no idea that it would end up being for a contest, how fun! If you feel up to it go on over and vote.

An Etsy Bitsy Problem
I have an Etsy bitsy problem. I love Etsy. If you haven’t been on there you need to give it a look. It’s sort of life Ebay only it’s for buying and selling homemade items. There are so many adorable things and some amazing prices. I love so many of the unique fabrics, colors, and items that aren’t found in the mainstream. Another nice feature is the “buy local” search function.
One of my favorite sellers is Essential Saltes Baby. My friend introduced them to me and they have just moved local, near my dad, in Fayetteville. They have some really nice cloth diaper covers and cute patterns. See blow:
Something I have me eye on is this set of organic quilted bibs from Organic Quilt Company. These are more than you would normally pay for a bib but they are thicker (which I need for my little drooler) and the prints are so great. See below:
Please share your favorite seller with me, I’d love to hear!

Buy 6 bumGenius get 1 free
A great deal from Cotton Babies and the first time I’ve seen such a deal on their website. Buy 6 bumGenius 3.0 One-Size diapers and get 1 free. Plus when you spend over $74.95 you get free shipping. These diapers are the main staple in my stash and I have to say I’ve been very pleased with them overall. There are some great deals out there right now!
